The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) required construction services for an innovative truck weigh and inspection station along Route I-78 Eastbound & Westbound.
The project involved an extensive site selection study, alternatives analysis, aerial survey and preparation of base mapping, geometric design, right-of-way acquisition, geotechnical studies, drainage and stormwater management facility design, traffic studies, community involvement, and utility relocations.
GPI provided the structural design, overseeing the staged reconstruction and widening of the I-78 EB and WB bridges over the Musconetcong River. The final design incorporated a staged deck and beam replacement, substructure widening, substructure repairs and geometric modifications to accommodate new bridge deck grades, seismic analysis and retrofit design, and new bridge barrier systems. Upon analyzing cost, right-of-way impact, and constructability, the structural design also included the replacement of the New Village Road Bridge over I-78 on a new alignment, utilizing high performance steel to increase span length and minimize number of spans to fit the preferred roadway alignment.
Despite the project’s complexity, GPI adhered to an accelerated design schedule, completing all Preliminary Design, Final Design, Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) package, and Environmental Documentation and Permitting within a 20-month timeframe from the notice to proceed.
