Description: GPI is performing Phases I-IV (Preliminary Engineering) for the rehabilitation / replacement of the American Falls Bridges. Located in the historic Niagara Falls State Park within 1000 ft. of the brink of Niagara Falls, these two bridges connect the Mainland USA to Goat Island via Green Island and provide a direct linkage within the Park for trolley transport of nearly 8 million visitors per year to and from Goat Island. Both structures are 3-span Thatcher Concrete Arch Bridges (an early form of a filled reinforced concrete arch) faced with stone masonry that had deteriorated to the point that necessitated a temporarily closure in 2004. To maintain this critical linkage within the park, a temporary truss structure was installed over the arch structures, a short-term fix until a long-term solution was developed. In addition to eliminating structural deficiencies, restoring trolley service to the island and maintaining the historic character of the bridges, a key project objective is to improve accessibility to meet current ADA requirements.

American Falls Bridges

Description: The project involved the construction of an arch bridge known as the “bridge in a backpack”. This is a system developed by the University of Maine that utilizes concrete filled tubular arch members that are constructed from non-corrosive carbon fiber materials. The concrete used within the tubes is a specific self-consolidating concrete mix that is specially designed to flow within the tubes.

Ashby Road over Scott Reservoir

Description: GPI performed routine and complex comprehensive bridge inspections, emergency inspections, underwater inspections, and load rating analyses throughout Maryland. More than 500 bridges were rated based on as-built and existing conditions.

Bridge Condition Inspections and Ratings

Location: Lawrence, MA

Description: The project purpose was to provide an efficient and attractive “gateway” to the downtown area and the historic North Canal District. The new bridge is a 130-foot simple span horizontally curved steel plate girder. The existing dry stone masonry arch structure was rehabilitated and retained to be utilized as a pedestrian overlook.

Canal Street over the Spicket River

Location: Jackson Township, Ocean County, NJ

Awards: ACECNJ Honor Award 2014; ASHENJ and NJAFA for achievements in providing accelerated bridge construction while efficiently meeting the NJDEP BDSFC requirements.

Description: GPI provided engineering services for the replacement of the Rova Farms Bridge. Immediately upstream of the bridge, and contiguous with the bridge is the primary spillway for the Cassville Lake Dam. GPI performed the Regular Dam Inspection and was responsible for preparing a Hazard Classification and Spillway Capacity Assessment including innovative incremental dam breach analysis to deliver the project and added scope to improve the dam to meet regulations on schedule and within budget.

Bridge Replacement at Rova Farms Bridge/Cassville Lake Dam

Description: GPI was selected for the replacement of a three-span steel bridge over the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) with a single-span structure. The Ellison Avenue profile was raised by approximately two feet to provide increased vertical clearance over the railroad. The use of lightweight fill was necessary to reduce additional loading on existing retaining walls.

Ellison Avenue Bridge

Location: Kingston, MA

Description: While this is a bridge project, Elm Street is also a dam structure under the safety inspection jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Office of Dam Safety. The bridge replacement involves the use of the new PCI NEXT pre-stressed precast concrete beam that are supported on secant pile abutments.

Elm Street over the Jones River

Description: Opened to traffic in October of 2014, the Forest Drive Bridge brought a much needed replacement of a deteriorated 81 year old structure. Despite access and scheduling challenges, bridge construction was completed in 3-½ months with minimal delay to the public. The entire project was delivered under budget and within a revised schedule.

Description: GPI provided design and construction services for the rehabilitation of the Gurney Road Bridge. The bridge is a single span stone masonry arch constructed in 1822. The project retained the historic stone masonry arch, as well as the stone abutments and wing walls.

Gurney Road over Fall Brook

Description: GPI provided design and construction support services for the rehabilitation of the Hamilton Avenue Bridge, a three-span, skewed, two single-leaf bascule bridge. With a new superstructure and a new mechanical and electrical systems, the bridge service life was extended 30 years.

Hamilton Avenue Bridge

Description: GPI served as the lead firm overseeing the design and construction. The center piece of the park is an iconic 700-foot sinusoidal tubular truss pedestrian bridge that is the result of a conscientious effort to create a bridge that was respectful of its natural and built surroundings while responsive to the numerous site constraints.

North Bank Bridge

Description: GPI provided design for the major reconstruction and reconfiguration of the Northern State Parkway (NSP) / NYS Route 110 interchange. It included the replacement of the existing concrete rigid frame NSP over NYS Route 110 Bridge with a 200 ft span, precast and prestressed concrete I Beam structure.

Description: GPI provided design and construction support services for the Roosevelt Island Bridge which spans from Queens to Roosevelt Island over the east channel of the East River. This $90 million project involved structural rehabilitation, coatings removal and replacement, mechanical and electrical improvements to the vertical lift span, new drainage and lighting systems, and repair of underwater piers.

Description: GPI prepared the design for a new composite five-span continuous prestressed butted concrete slab beam superstructure with a composite cast in place concrete deck slab. A shallow structure with minimal retaining walls was required to avoid profile adjustments, environmental impacts, and maintaining the hydraulic opening.

Description: GPI provided design services for the replacement of the Shady Lane Bridge with a new structure that eliminated the frequent roadway overtopping and eliminated the load posting requirement allowing for full legal loads to cross the bridge.

Shady Lane over Dorsey Branch

Description: GPI inspected the two newly constructed arch bridges over the Zoar Valley Gorge/Cattaraugus Creek using specialized under-bridge inspection units, technical climbing techniques and confined space entry techniques to access the interior of the primary structural elements.
