Water is essential for life. Water scarcity and poor water quality in one place may coincide with devastating flooding and stormwater events in another place. Today, it is one of our greatest challenges to manage this precious resource.
GPI specialists are using their engineering expertise to provide a variety of innovative solutions in the areas of stormwater management, wetland delineation and assessment, water pollution control, and wastewater treatment.
Wetland delineation and assessment
Water pollution control
Reclaimed Water Aquifer Recharge Study, Winter Haven, FL
GPI assisted in performing a feasibility study to evaluate beneficial aquifer recharge projects using reclaimed water. GPI performed site selection using ArcInfo GIS and readily-available data layers, identifying sites with suitable hydrogeological characteristics and outside of regulatory constraints.
Salinity Barrier Removal, Tampa Bay, FL
GPI was contracted to assist the Tampa Bay Estuary Program and Southwest Florida Water Management District with a project designed to restore tidal habitat by modification of salinity barriers in Tampa Bay. As part of a pilot monitoring project, GPI monitored a variety of parameters in a system where the barriers were modified allowing for tidal flushing. This innovative approach to water quality management resulted in improved water quality conditions, reduction in pollution downstream of the barriers, and restored close to a mile of oligohaline (brackish) habitat.
