Modern school building with entrance.

RRMM Architects Silver Spring International Middle School Addition

GPI provided structural engineering design services for a 36,000-SF addition to Silver Spring International Middle School.

The project included the demolition of a portion of the existing building to allow for construction of a new two-story structure housing multiple gymnasiums and related fitness facilities. The new addition was designed to be structurally isolated from the existing structure and incorporates large, multi-story spaces for the gymnasiums. The roof framing consists of long-span open-web steel trusses, while the floor framing includes a composite slab on metal deck supported by a combination of steel beams, columns, and CMU bearing walls. The lateral resisting system is composed of reinforced masonry shear walls, and two fire portal frames were designed and installed within existing areas of the building.
