GPI’s traffic engineering solutions include planning, analyzing, designing, and the inspection of transportation projects ranging from simple site developments to complex traffic signal systems. We are one of the recognized leaders in ITS solutions, often involving complicated simulation modeling that is used not only to evaluate the projects merits, but also as visuals, including virtual reality, for the general public to understand the benefits. When it comes to traffic engineering services, we are committed to continue the trend started by our founders of providing new and innovative solutions.

Ballston Avenue Transportation/Safety/Streetscape Improvements
Client/Owner: City of Saratoga Springs, NY
Location: City of Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County, NY
GPI Contact: Michael Wieszchowski, PE, PTOE
Description: For this locally administered federal aid project, GPI provided professional transportation planning and engineering services to the City of Saratoga Springs. The project is located along Ballston Avenue (NYS-50) which is part of the National Highway System (NHS), a designation by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) that indicates a highways importance related to the nation’s economy, defense and mobility. The project limits include from the intersection with Lincoln Avenue northeastward to the intersection with Hamilton Street. This project included reconstruction of the travel lanes, improving pedestrian and bicycle mobility via sidewalks along both sides of the road and shared lanes, so that the road functions as a “Complete Street”, widening of Ballston Ave and realigning the curb line to provide a center left-turn lane/flush and raised median, replacing the traffic signal at Hamilton Street, install a new traffic control signal at Lincoln Avenue, modify the Union Street intersection to reduce vehicle conflicts by utilizing one-way streets away from the intersection, pedestrian scale lighting, high visibility cross-walks, and streetscaping amenities. Traffic detours were designed and implemented to expedite the construction schedule, reduce costs and improve worker safety. The detour plan included rerouting of traffic, advance Variable Message Signs (VMS) and temporary traffic signals. The project also included a mid-block crosswalk and pedestrian refuge area to allow safe pedestrian crossing. As part of the crossing, a pedestrian activated pushbutton Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon Assembly was provided to advise motorists of pedestrians crossing road. A new drainage system will be provided, along with new traffic signs to comply with the National MUTCD and the NYS Supplement. Final design plans, specifications and construction cost estimate is currently being prepared for this project. In addition, this project included right of way incidental and acquisition performed by R.K. Hite and Company. GPI also be provided construction support and inspection services.

NYC Off-Peak Signal Timing Initiative
Client/Owner: NYCDOT
Location: New York, NY
GPI Contact: Michael Salatti, PE, PTOE
Description: GPI worked with NYCDOT to develop the New York City Off-Peak Signal Timing Initiative. The benefits of this system are the improved travel times that translate into less time on the roads, improved air quality, less spent on energy and an improved quality of life and safety for pedestrians.
