The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) aims to safeguard and improve New York’s natural resources. The Division of Marine Resources within DEC focuses on preserving the marine ecosystem, overseeing fisheries, shellfish, and protected marine habitats along the state’s coastal shores, helping both recreational and commercial interests.
DEC selected a location for its Division of Marine Resources headquarters at the waterfront Nissequogue River State Park in Kings Park, Suffolk County. The 30,000 sq ft facility aligns with DEC’s commitment to sustainability, achieving LEED Silver certification for energy-efficient construction. The building incorporates features such as water-use reduction, rainwater management, eco-friendly building materials, and solar panels on the ground and roof. The project follows NYS Executive Order 88, adhering to stringent performance and energy conservation standards.
As the prime consultant, GPI oversaw LEED and EO-88 consulting and commissioning services. Throughout the design phase, GPI conducted meetings to address progress and LEED conformance status, including specification reviews, action item tracking, calculations, and services administration. GPI managed the construction phase, incorporating commissioning activities to guide the project to a successful completion. The result is an ultramodern facility that enables the Division of Marine Resources to effectively carry out their mission of managing the state’s fisheries and marine ecology.
