Ellis Hospital Ellis Hospital

Ellis Hospital underwent a $19.4 million, phased renovation project to combine its cardiology, vascular surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery services in one location and expand its pre-operation preparation and post-operation recovery into one area.

At the heart of this suite is the hospital’s hybrid operating room, equipped with both imaging equipment to perform minimally invasive procedures and all the equipment needed for a traditional surgery. In addition to the hybrid operating room, the suite also features an electrophysiology lab and angiography suite, both constructed and designed as imaging operating rooms.

The construction took place in the center of the hospital’s A-wing with its active operating rooms and two cardiac catheterization labs surrounded on all four sides with new construction work, requiring extensive project phasing and planning to keep hospital functions active during construction.

The first phase of the project required the installation of a temporary air handler to serve the existing EP lab, which was to remain in service until the construction of the new one was complete. Temporary chilled water and hot water was brought in to support this new air handler, which was to be installed in the project area in a location that would minimize the construction timeline and allow for the most work to be completed in earlier phases, saving the removal of the temporary air handler for the final phase.

The second phase allowed for the new central station air handler to be installed in place of the existing one and allowed for the creation of the new pre-operation and post-operation areas. The existing areas were served from the main air handling systems that serve the rest of the hospitals major operation suite and support spaces. Coordination between the design team, contractors, and building owner was required to minimize the shut-down times and impact on the active surgical suite.
