Mansfield University in Northcentral Pennsylvania opened its doors in 1857 as Mansfield Classical Seminary. The University’s historic charm has been preserved throughout its campus.
GPI provided civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and structural engineering services for a comprehensive survey, investigation, and evaluation of critical utility infrastructure systems across the Mansfield University campus. Comprised of approximately 25 buildings serving academic, residential, athletic, administrative, and operational functions, the campus faced widespread infrastructure challenges due to aging systems reaching or exceeding their life expectancy. Frequent failures across multiple utilities had resulted in unplanned outages and costly emergency repairs, prompting the need for a strategic, campus-wide assessment.
The project began with an in-depth utility infrastructure study focused on identifying failure points, assessing system conditions and capacities, and prioritizing upgrades. The team conducted a detailed investigative analysis of each utility system, recognizing that interdependencies between systems could significantly impact project design, budget, and scheduling. After evaluating multiple upgrade options, we performed a cost-benefit review and worked closely with the University to prioritize projects based on urgency, operational impact, and available resources. This process culminated in a phased implementation plan designed to guide systematic improvements across the campus.
With the infrastructure study finalized, we are now advancing into Phase 2 of the project, which includes decommissioning the central steam plant and replacing it with localized high-efficiency hot water systems. Phase 3 will follow with the replacement of outdated electrical infrastructure. These upgrades are part of a long-term strategy to modernize the campus utility network, improve reliability, and reduce operational disruptions while supporting the University’s future growth and sustainability goals.
