New Jersey Turnpike Authority NJ Turnpike Interchange 6 to 9 Widening Program

GPI provided construction management services for the New Jersey Transit Authority (NJTA) Interchange 6 to 9 Widening Program. This program is the Turnpike’s most significant construction project in the 58-year history of the Authority.

In a joint venture with AECOM and PB Americas, GPI provided construction management, scheduling, change order management, cost control, resident engineering, inspection, and material testing services.

The construction involved the addition of 170 lane miles to the NJ Turnpike between Interchange 6 in Mansfield Township, Burlington County, and Interchange 9 in East Brunswick, Middlesex County. In addition, it included the construction of a new toll plaza at Interchange 8 in East Windsor, Mercer County. Work occurred along approximately 34 miles of the busy highway adding three lanes in each direction between Interchanges 6 and 8A and one lane in each direction between Interchanges 8A and 9. At project completion, there are a total of 12 lanes – six lanes in each direction from Interchange 6 to Interchange 11.

The program was built through careful scheduling of 26 planned construction bid packages. An extensive staff of field project managers, resident engineers, field engineers, office engineers, and inspectors managed activities such as new bridge construction, earthwork, drainage, recharge basins, traffic control, utilities and agency coordination as well as electrical, lighting, fiber, ITS, overhead signs, sound barrier and major paving work.
