Pennsylvania Department of Transportation SR 309 Section 03M McAdoo Highway Restoration

PennDOT initiated a comprehensive reconstruction of Kennedy Drive (SR 309). The project encompassed a full replacement of the paving, drainage enhancements, and the installation of new curbing and traffic signals. In adherence to the Americans with Disabilities Act, the project mandated the inclusion of curb ramps at all four corners of each intersection, complete with rubber pads designed to aid individuals with visual impairments.

GPI’s engagement began with a study of a 4-mile segment of SR 309 in Schuylkill County. This involved assessing pavement conditions, evaluating intersections, and proposing realignments and redesigns. The study incorporated cost estimates, enabling the department to prioritize needs within the available funding. The McAdoo project was chosen by PennDOT, and GPI was contracted to progress the project from design to construction. The scope of work included full-depth pavement reconstruction, replacement of deteriorated concrete curb and sidewalk, construction of ADA curb ramps, traffic signal upgrades, safety enhancements, drainage system upgrades, reconstruction of part of the stream enclosure, guide rail replacement, and addressing other critical safety and aesthetic requirements. GPI collaborated with PennDOT and members of the local community on the design, working alongside the selected contractor to complete the project nearly a year ahead of schedule without significant impact to the community.
