GPI provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and structural engineering design and construction administration services for the new Takoma Park Library and renovations to the existing Community Center.
The former main library and computer lab were demolished, and the new library was elevated nearly two feet above the 100-year flood plain. The new 19,000-SF facility included design for the main library, children’s room, computer labs, offices, conference rooms, a lounge, game room, staff areas, and restrooms. Renovations also extended to the adjacent restroom serving the Recreation Department. GPI performed Life Cycle Cost Analysis and Energy Modeling to evaluate efficiency options, provided a backup UPS system, and conducted Mechanical, Electrical, and Structural Value Engineering studies. The team navigated numerous design changes and unforeseen conditions, developing flexible solutions such as consolidating two existing transformers into one outside the flood plain, rerouting the electrical duct bank around an oversized footing, and revising plumbing design to address groundwater issues. GPI also coordinated footing elevations with existing site utilities uncovered during construction. The project incorporates an all-electric design and a Photovoltaic System, supporting its Zero Emissions goals. The project is pursuing LEED Gold certification.
