GPI provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering design services for the renovation of the South Wing at The Woods Academy.
The South Wing is a 25,000-SF section of the existing 60,000-SF building, originally constructed in 1961, and includes classrooms, source rooms, administrative areas, a library, and offices. GPI also provided design for a new commercial kitchen. The renovation included a complete reconfiguration of the South Wing’s floor plan, requiring modifications to the building systems. Scope also included design for heightened ceilings in the library areas, including the technology room, upper library, and lower library, as well as new exterior lighting for the canopy. GPI designed a new Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system with a Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS), along with a new electrical distribution system, full replacement of existing wiring and circuitry, a new power layout, LED lighting, and energy-efficient lighting controls. Plumbing upgrades included new fixtures, supply lines, and vent piping. Throughout the renovation, GPI coordinated with ERA Building Solutions to incorporate energy-saving upgrades recommended for the South Wing.
This project received the 2026 IIDA Premiere Design Award – Education K-12.
