The University of Scranton opened in 1888, originally as St. Thomas College. The University educates approximately 4,700 students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees.
GPI provided engineering services for the construction of a new four-story, 80,000 sqft building on the University of Scranton campus, Weiss Hall. The project was partially funded by a federal grant from the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) and complied with all applicable NIST requirements. The building’s central location and open design were intended to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among university departments and create educational opportunities for the broader Scranton community.
The facility includes offices, research and classroom spaces , study and exam rooms, two rooftop terraces, a 10,000 sqft IDEA Center, and a yoga studio. Weiss Hall hosts University of Scranton’s Department of Criminal Justice, Cybersecurity, and Sociology, Department of Psychology, The Center for Health, Education, and Wellness (CHEW), and Student Health Services.
The team’s scope included the design of a new HVAC system with exhaust and automatic temperature controls, upgraded electrical systems with new lighting, and a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)-compliant fire alarm system. Land development and surveying services were also provided.
In support of the University of Scranton’s sustainability goals, the building is currently targeted for LEED Silver Certification.
