The Borough of Ellwood City, located south of Connoquenessing Creek in Pennsylvania, received PennVEST funding to remediate critical deficiencies in its wastewater collection and conveyance system.
The existing system included an 18-inch interceptor receiving flow from the 2nd Street siphon, which consisted of 8-inch and 10-inch lines crossing the creek. GPI executed an $8.5 million PennVEST-funded project to remediate the system.
This interceptor was located along a steep hillside and was largely inaccessible and severely deteriorated, with exposed and aerial sections, compromised anchoring, and areas in poor overall condition, posing ongoing operational and maintenance challenges.
The project eliminated a substantial portion of the failing interceptor by rerouting flows from the 2nd Street siphon to a new pump station equipped with a grinder to minimize clogging from debris.
Wastewater is now conveyed via a new 18-inch force main along Wampum Avenue to the former WWTP site, where flows continue to be pumped to the existing treatment facility through the primary lift station.
Additional improvements included replacement of the screening unit at the primary lift station, further enhancing system reliability and long-term operational performance.
