Grand arched ceiling in train station

GTM Architects Washington Union Station

GPI provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services for the development of as-built documentation for Washington Union Station.

Working within a complex, continuously operating environment, GPI performed detailed field surveys and reconciled multiple generations of legacy documents with observed conditions. Electrical documentation included system one-line diagrams, risers, and distribution plans that traced infrastructure up to retail connection points, integrating historical records with field verification to improve reliability of the final deliverables. Mechanical system documentation centered on central plant distribution, including steam, chilled water, and heating water systems, with an emphasis on primary equipment and piping major ductwork. Air handling units were cataloged with key attributes such as capacity, approximate age, and service areas, creating a clear understanding of system coverage across the facility without over-documenting secondary ductwork. Plumbing and fire protection documentation similarly prioritized major distribution systems, including domestic water, sanitary waste, and fire protection piping. By focusing on primary infrastructure and integrating field observations with available as-builts, GPI delivered a coordinated, high-level representation of existing systems that supports future renovation planning, system upgrades, and ongoing facility management.
