Description: When the air conditioning system failed at PS 234M Independence School located in downtown Manhattan, the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) retained GPI to replace the system. Due to the emergency nature of the work, the SCA requested that the project take place throughout the winter months. GPI designed the replacement chilled water plant, which included three new 90-ton air-cooled chillers with pumps, piping, controls, and appurtenances. GPI preordered the chillers due to the long lead time for delivery and then completed the project design on an accelerated schedule. Construction of the chilled water plant took place on schedule and the air conditioning was operational by late spring before the weather turned warm.

Description: GPI worked as part of a design team to specify improvements to seven schools within the North Rockland Central School District under the Expanding our Children’s Education and Learning (EXCEL) program. This is a program provides additional funding for certain types of school construction projects administered through State Education Department and Dormitory Authority, State of New York. Responsibilities included design and construction support for projects including replacement of boilers, climate control systems, and air conditioning systems. This project involved multiple schools in the County of Rockland where GPI designed HVAC system upgrades to improve comfort levels while reducing energy consumption. Rooftop air handling units were replaced and existing oil-fired heating boilers were replaced with a natural gas-fired condensing/dual fuel boiler. Classroom cabinet fan-coil units were removed and replaced with variable-refrigerant-flow (VRF) air conditioning systems.

Description: GPI provided civil and structural engineering for the new 81,000 sq ft Delaware Valley School District Elementary School. The building and site are designed to meet LEED Silver Certification. The project incorporates many sustainable features, including a rainwater harvesting system for watering athletic fields and infiltration of all remaining stormwater on site. The structural system for the building consisted of insulated concrete form load bearing walls that provide outstanding insulating properties and tighter envelope. The project required extensive coordination with the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission to avoid and protect archeological sensitive areas of the site. The project also required NPDES stormwater permitting as well as permitting of an on-site sewage system including installation of long term monitoring wells. Extensive coordination with the Borough of Matamoras was required for improvements to the adjacent municipal park. The improvements included development of joint use athletic facilities and site access improvements within the park. GPI is also the commissioning agent on the project. *Pending LEED Silver

Description: GPI provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services for the new Bear Creek Charter School. The K-8 school was constructed to provide a cost-effective, nurturing, and sustainably designed environment that incorporates green principles and methodologies to embrace modern learning objectives. The 64,000 sq ft state of the art learning facility features 2 two-story classroom wings, each equipped with separate bathroom facilities. Classrooms were designed with a modern-technological approach, featuring smart boards and a lighting design that utilizes daylight harvesting to reduce energy consumption and cost. The charter school is equipped with a full-service kitchen and a dining area that seats 160. The gymnasium seats 1,200 with portable seating that collapses in order to transform the area into a music classroom if needed. The entryway opens up to a rustic common area with a fireplace and a floor constructed of wood that was salvaged from an old, elegant New Hampshire barn. An expansive exterior courtyard separates both wings of the building and is comprised of gardening plots for students to acquire a hands-on knowledge of gardening techniques.

Description: GPI provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services for this design-build project that was a collaborative effort between the design builder, the project design team, the New Jersey School Development Authority, and the School District. The facility totals to 123,000 sq ft and houses pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. The building program includes classrooms, a multi-purpose gymnasium with an elevated stage, a media center, administrative offices, outdoor play areas, and a full commercial kitchen. The building incorporates the latest educational technologies and infrastructure to provide an enhanced the learning environment. MEP systems included a variety of sustainable features such as energy recovery, daylight harvesting, a hybrid LED / high-efficiency fluorescent lighting system, condensing boilers, and advanced building automation systems to optimize energy performance. Systems were chosen to minimize energy usage and provide years of reliable and efficient service. *LEED Certified
