Following the unexpected closure and demolition of the original Crown Point Bridge in 2009 due to structural concerns, a replacement crossing was urgently needed to restore this critical transportation link between New York and Vermont. The project required an accelerated schedule and a coordinated construction effort to minimize disruption to the traveling public and regional commerce.
GPI was selected by the New York State Department of Transportation to provide construction inspection services under an existing term agreement, supporting the project from early mobilization through completion. GPI’s team included inspectors, a Chief Inspector, Senior Inspector, Office Engineer, and a full-time CPM Project Scheduler, all working to ensure quality, maintain project documentation, and support schedule monitoring throughout the construction process.
With near-constant construction activity taking place to meet aggressive schedule milestones, GPI’s field and office staff provided continuous inspection and coordination support. The project involved the construction of new roadway approaches, abutments supported on micropile foundations, seven new piers, deep drilled shafts founded in bedrock, and the installation of a prefabricated steel superstructure that was floated into place as a single unit.
The GPI team delivered responsive construction inspection services on complex, fast-tracked infrastructure projects, helping to ensure quality, maintain schedules, and support the successful delivery of a vital transportation asset.
