The Manhattan Bridge carries hundreds of thousands of users and transit riders daily. Originally constructed in 1909, the bridge has undergone ongoing rehabilitation to address decades of heavy use, structural wear, and component deterioration, ensuring its continued reliability as one of New York City’s most critical transportation links.
GPI provided resident engineering and inspection services for the $95-million structural and component rehabilitation of the Manhattan Bridge, supporting a wide range of complex repair and maintenance activities across this critical New York City crossing. The project encompassed 14 major work elements addressing structural, mechanical, and architectural components to extend the service life and improve the overall performance of the bridge.
Key improvements included rehabilitation and protective painting of structural steel elements; replacement of fascia railings and posts along the south walkway; and extensive repairs to structural components such as arch brackets, stringer diaphragms, gusset plates, and subway floor beams. The work also involved welding inspection for steel repairs and the replacement of ornamental castings at both the Manhattan and Brooklyn towers, preserving the bridge’s historic character while enhancing structural integrity.
Additional upgrades addressed operational and drainage systems, including improvements to roadway armored joints, replacement of trench drains on the south upper roadway, and rehabilitation of cable housing systems. Work at the anchorages included replacement of the dehumidification system, modular joints, and maintenance platform infrastructure, as well as upgrades to bridge traveler access platforms.
Throughout construction, the team coordinated closely with NYC Transit and other stakeholders to maintain operations and minimize disruptions. The project also included miscellaneous and incidental repairs across the structure, ensuring a comprehensive approach to maintaining one of the city’s most heavily utilized transportation assets.
