New York City Department of Transportation Williamsburg Bridge Reconstruction and Rehabilitation

The Williamsburg Bridge, a vital connection between Manhattan and Brooklyn, has undergone a long-term, multi-contract rehabilitation program to address aging infrastructure and maintain its role as a critical transportation link within New York City. As the final major construction contract in this program, Contract 8 focused on completing key structural repairs and system upgrades to ensure the bridge’s continued safety, reliability, and performance.

GPI provided resident engineering and inspection services, including construction oversight and inspections, resident engineering and field inspection reporting, materials inspection, testing, and quality assurance, project controls, and coordination with project stakeholders, for the $271-million reconstruction effort. This phase addressed remaining work items from earlier contracts, delivering a comprehensive approach to finalizing the bridge’s rehabilitation.

Major work included strengthening of the main towers through replacement of deteriorated structural components such as lacing bars, gusset plates, batten plates, and diagonal bracing, as well as bearing and support replacements. The project also involved lead paint abatement and application of new protective coating systems, suspender rope replacement and adjustment, and seismic retrofitting of intermediate towers.

Additional improvements included rehabilitation of anchorage structures through crack repair and structural reinforcement; installation of inspection and maintenance platforms; restoration of historic lighting elements; and implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to enhance traffic operations. Work also encompassed rehabilitation of structural steel elements across the bridge, including chords, saddles, and other critical components.

GPI’s team, including the resident engineer, office administrator, and field inspectors, provided continuous oversight and coordination throughout construction. Through inspection, documentation, and quality verification, GPI supported the successful completion of this final phase of the Williamsburg Bridge rehabilitation program, helping to extend the service life of this iconic structure and improve safety and functionality for the traveling public.
