Luzerne County Community College Luzerne County Community College Esports Arena

Video games have been around since the 1950s, but high-definition gaming as we know it today emerged in the mid-2000s. For today’s college students, advanced gaming has been part of their entire lives. What started as individual play has transformed into the competitive realm of esports, where teams of gamers compete live over the internet. Colleges, universities, and high schools now recognize esports as a co-ed varsity team sport played in inter-school leagues. Unlike traditional sports that require gyms, esports demand advanced computing equipment and specialized spaces.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, Luzerne County Community College in Pennsylvania entered the esports scene by establishing the Trailblazer Esports Arena at its main campus in Nanticoke. Founded in 1966, the college is one of the commonwealth’s early community colleges, boasting over 4,000 enrolled students and offering a diverse range of occupational, liberal arts/transfer, and career training programs. The arena, situated within LCCC’s Trailblazer Campus Center, features a gaming arena, a shoutcaster (esports commentator) station, and a student lounge.

Beyond facilitating students’ participation in esports league play, the arena supports anew academic curriculum designed for those interested in pursuing esports coaching at high school, collegiate, and professional levels. GPI provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering design and construction services for the Luzerne Community College Trailblazer Esports Arena project. Given the $55,000-worth of advanced gaming computers in the space, specialized HVAC and lighting design were essential. To meet the increased computing demand and ensure a comfortable environment, the design incorporated additional split system variable refrigerant flow cooling systems. The lighting was upgraded to include general overhead lighting and accent lighting, offering both gamers and spectators optimal visual control. A new power panel was specifically dedicated to the gaming area.
