City of Nashua, NH Nashua Transit Center Improvements

After two decades of use, Nashua’s downtown transit center required a major renovation to address various issues. The transit platform faced pavement rutting and sinking storm drains due to poor subgrade conditions and bus traffic impact. ADA requirements necessitated widening the platform, while circulation challenges arose from adjacent City Hall parking and a wide street at the parking garage entrance. Safety concerns emerged from snow and ice shedding off the canopy roof. Additionally, public bathroom configuration issues led to inappropriate use, surveillance problems, and maintenance issues. Worn finishes in the building required replacement.

GPI collaborated with the City of Nashua and the architect to enhance the transit center. The initial phase explored options for improving circulation and pedestrian accommodations, considering a concept for transforming the area into an extended pedestrian plaza. After evaluating costs and maintenance, a design featuring a conventional curbed street configuration with a narrowed Garden Street was selected. The project included high-strength asphalt, an enhanced structural base, stormwater structure relocation, platform upgrades, landscaping, lighting, complete bathroom reconstruction, waiting room and break room renovation, and the installation of a snow and ice melting system for the canopy. GPI also provided construction engineering and inspection services.
