Groundwork Lawrence, Inc. O’Neill Park

Lawrence, MA, is a diverse city with a rich history featuring a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. The O’Neill Memorial Sports Complex in Lawrence is a seven-acre rectangular park named after James O’Neill, a long-time city alderman and parks director who founded the Greater Lawrence Little League in 1951. The park includes two softball fields, a multi-use field, a basketball court complex, lighting, and irrigation. It serves as a heavily utilized space by nearby schools and local leagues.

Opened in the early 1980s, the park originated as an urban renewal initiative and spans two former city blocks. Development of the park required removal of around 60 private properties, a segment of Elm Street, and several public alleyways. Utilities from the old streets were still located underneath the park. Despite the presence of softball fields, the park faced challenges due to inadequate maintenance and capital investment. The basketball court and lighting were approaching the end of their lifespan, the multi-use field turf had worn down to bare soil, and the irrigation system was nonfunctional. Many of the park’s shade trees had become root-bound, and numerous cherry trees were in a state of decline. To address these issues, the city applied for and received a state grant for the park’s renovation.

GPI was tasked with finding solutions for the park’s issues while keeping the softball fields intact. After a series of design meetings, a preferred concept was chosen at a public meeting. The design involved upgrading the multi-use field, moving the basketball court to a more open location, and creating space for a new playground for the Oliver Partnership School. The plan also added new walking paths, lighting, and irrigation. A notable change was the addition of a pedestrian seating plaza along Lawrence Street, to serve as the park’s main entrance and a gathering spot.
