New York State Canal Corporation NY State Canal Structures Inspection

The New York State Canal Corporation (NYSCC), overseen by the New York Power Authority, manages the New York State canal system, which consists of the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca canals. This extensive waterway spans 524 miles and features 57 locks and 17 lift bridges, connecting the Hudson River with the Great Lakes, Finger Lakes, and Lake Champlain. In 2017, the NYSCC marked the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal groundbreaking. The Canal System includes the Erie Canalway Trail, catering to pedestrians, bicyclists, and cross-country skiers. Together, these canals and trails provide a top-tier recreational route, offering scenic and unique experiences in New York State.

The NYSCC’s asset management and structural inspection program ensures the regular inspection of various structures to maintain the canal system’s good condition. These structures typically include locks, dams, spillways, waste weirs, feeder canals, guard gates, lift bridges, embankments, canalway trails, and other necessary facilities. These structures undergo a regular cycle of condition inspections to identify and address any maintenance or repair needs.

GPI performs various inspection services on behalf of the NYSCC. Assignments completed so far include:

Mohawk Valley Moveable Dam: As the prime consultant, GPI oversaw the underwater inspection of moveable dam structures in the Mohawk Valley section of the Erie Canal.

Western Division Non-Bridge Structural Inspection: GPI served as the prime consultant for this effort, conducting inspections and structural assessments of various structures across the western regions (Erie, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca) of the NYS Canal System. This included locks, dams, sluice gates, terminals, retaining walls, guard gates, waste weirs, and culverts.

Systemwide Bridge Inspection and Load Rating: GPI was the prime consultant tasked with conducting structural condition inspections and load rating services for bridges across the entire NYS canal system. Inspection teams, each comprising a NYSCC-approved, New York State-registered PE and an Assistant ATL, inspected pedestrian and vehicle bridges throughout the canal system.
