National Park Service Statue of Liberty Restoration Temporary Power

More than 1.6 million people visit the Statue of Liberty each year, riding a ferry across New York Harbor to get a firsthand view of the national icon and symbol of freedom. The National Park Service, caretaker of the Statue of Liberty since 1933, was awarded funds through the Great American Outdoors Act to repair the historic fort that provides a foundation for the monument and its pedestal.

Louis C. Allegrone Masonry Inc. was named the general and masonry contractor for the $22 million project to rehabilitate the granite masonry of the 11-pointed star-shaped Fort Wood beneath the monument. GPI was hired by Allegrone to design temporary electrical and sanitary services to support its construction work and job trailers. The GPI Buildings Group, using its experience delivering sophisticated engineering solutions on tight deadlines to meet client needs, provided technical and construction design drawings and specifications for code-compliant temporary power and sanitation. GPI finished complete drawings in less than two months from the January 2021 engineering design start. This fast turnaround enabled Allegrone to obtain the necessary permits in advance of mobilizing its job trailers and equipment to Liberty Island in support of the anticipated spring construction start.

GPI surveyed existing utilities and reviewed the proposed site plan depicting layout of the job trailers and their proximity to power and sanitary drainage. Access to 480V three-phase power, typically used in larger commercial and industrial sites, was available, but required GPI to design a solution to transform it to 120/240V single-phase power to provide electricity to the job trailers. GPI also designed resilient power panels and receptacles that were rated for exterior and wet applications at the outdoor work site. GPI designed sanitary sewer connections and domestic water services for the job trailers, which connected to existing sanitary utility holes and water services on the island.
