The Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95) is a critical 6.5 mile, six-lane corridor in New York City, carrying over 150,000 vehicles daily, of which approximately 14% are trucks. It is a major, highly congested freight route that links the George Washington Bridge to the Throgs Neck and Whitestone bridges as well as providing a connection to and from New England along I-95.
Under this project, the existing ITS infrastructure on I-95/Cross Bronx Expressway from I-87/Major Deegan Expressway to the I-295/I-695 interchange by the Throgs Neck Bridge is being replaced, modified, and enhanced as necessary to implement an Active Transportation Demand Management (ATDM) System in order to improve the Region’s capabilities to actively manage the roadway. These improvements are being accomplished through the deployment of various Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure and supporting equipment and devices. Detailed design includes design of Variable Message Signs (VMS), Lane Control Signs, and post-mounted VMS (Blank Out Signs) to be used in the Active Traffic Management System. The design also includes new detection specifically chosen to provide the complex traffic data required to operate an ATDM system, and the replacement and upgrade of other existing detector systems, which will then be used for automated lane control and advisory speeds. In addition, the team replaced or added CCTV systems, Fiber Optic Communications, Ethernet network devices, and power distribution systems for the new/existing infrastructure. All of the above is being integrated into the existing fiber optic communications backbone at various nodes for monitoring and management from the Region’s Joint Transportation Management Center (JTMC) in Queens.
The project also required the generation of appropriate MPT plans for all the work involved, as well as concrete barrier and guiderail work.
In addition, as part of the project, GPI is providing construction support services to NYSDOT Region 11.
