The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) required traffic signal timing and arterial optimization in Nassau County corridors in order to improve safety, maximize efficiency, coordinate signal timing, and to reduce overall delay on these arterials. This project improved the service with the development of innovative timing plans using the Synchro traffic signal optimization program.
A primary objective of this project was to create optimum traffic flow patterns, thereby reducing vehicle delay, vehicle stops, fuel consumption, and vehicle emissions. This was achieved with the development of innovative timing plans using the Synchro traffic signal optimization program. Other computer programs, such as SIMTraffic (Synchro’s companion modeling program), proved to be beneficial and augmented the Synchro program, as needed, to optimize traffic signal timing.
Project deliverables included 100 turning movement volume counts, ATR count data, time-space diagrams, traffic signal coordinated timing plans, project design and summary reports with MOE’s and Synchro data files for the project intersections.
GPI met these objectives by way of our local knowledge of the State’s roadway network, past experience on similar projects, and extensive understanding of timing plan development. The team utilized data collection to assemble current intersection plans and timing data from the State, develop an inventory of traffic signal equipment and capabilities, and collect additional traffic volume data.
The team also conducted traffic analyses of the existing conditions, developed a current database for signal timing simulation and optimization signal timing plans and time space diagrams utilizing Synchro, and/ or SIMTraffic, Transyt-7F, signal optimization programs. Documentation of the traffic analysis and optimizations was compiled into a report for NYSDOT review and comment
