GPI is providing design services for the installation of Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) at 840 signalized intersections throughout Manhattan and Staten Island for NYCDOT Traffic Operations. This multi-year initiative supports New York City’s commitment to accessibility by enhancing pedestrian safety and mobility at intersections across two boroughs.
The project begins with comprehensive field investigations at each location. GPI performed detailed site assessments to verify and update existing traffic signal drawings, confirm signal phasing, document pavement markings and intersection geometry, and identify pedestrian ramp locations, utilities, roadway and sidewalk materials, street furniture, and other field conditions. Field measurements, photography, and preliminary layout sketches are developed to determine optimal APS pushbutton and pole placement in accordance with NYCDOT standards and accessibility guidelines.
Using collected data, GPI prepares design and shop drawings for APS installation at each intersection. The team works together with the contractor, coordinating directly with NYCDOT Traffic Operations and collaborating with various City agencies to address site-specific constraints, utility conflicts, and constructability considerations. All submittals undergo rigorous internal QA/QC, and GPI responds promptly to agency review comments to maintain schedule and ensure compliance with City standards.
Final deliverables include as-built documentation and Professional Engineer certification. Through close coordination, detailed field validation, and quality-controlled design development, GPI is helping deliver a large-scale APS program that improves accessibility, safety, and regulatory compliance across New York City’s pedestrian network.
